The park has long been a popular area, with daytrippers arriving by ferry in the 19th century and now by car and boat. The park has amenities, a kiosk and is fronted by a netted tidal pool. The beach is moderately steep, with a narrow strip of intertidal sand, then the deeper water of the harbour (leaking showers North Rocks).

It then continues for another 200 m along the northern northwest-facing side, which includes the tidal pool and which terminates at the mouth of a small creek. Beach continues north of the creek for 130 m to a seawall and rocky point. It is a low energy, west-facing strip of sand and fronted by 50 m wide sand flats, with the Clontarf Marina and jetty crossing the northern end of the beach.

In 1912 Pier One was officially re-constructed as a cargo wharf and passenger terminal. Prior to the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, passengers would board ferries at Pier One to travel across the harbour to North Sydney. It maintains year round communication with all surf clubs and emergency services. Fishermans is a quieter but not popular swimming spot owing to the often brown colour of the water; a result of clay eroded from the underlying clays and shales, in addition to the seaweed that often covers the beach, and the coming and going of fishing boats.

In two places the platform retreats and the waves reach the sand producing steep, narrow reflective beaches. On the north side of the point there is a small 50 m long beach sometimes called Little Makaha, while on the southern side there is a smaller gap, which lead to the reef break called Butterbox.
